1. What is Legend for PDMLink?
Having successfully interpreted hundreds of thousands of files generated in numerous heterogeneous, often proprietary, CAD applications, Legend for PDMLink is a proven solution for complex data migrations.
To gain additional insight, review one of our case studies that outline how Legend migrated 60,000 files into PDMLink.
2. Why should I use Legend instead of manual loading?
Legend allows you to migrate your CAD metadata into a PDM system for a fraction of the time and cost of manual loading. Legend's wizard interface walks you through the migration process of defining the information sources, mapping to their respective targets, and capturing metadata/structure.
Additionally, our pre-processing tools assess data readiness before documents are loaded and communicate status via detailed reports. (Data Cleansing). By automating the repetitive chore of manual loading, you'll improve the quality of your migration and contain costs.
3. Why should I use Legend instead of writing custom scripts?
Legend for PDMLink is more reliable than custom scripts in three major areas of data migration: data compatibility, cost, and schedule. Legend vs. Custom Scripts.
Estimates for custom script development, testing, and validation are attractive in the planning stages. However, when implemented, the nature of custom programming (try, fail, try again) can cause schedule delays and divert resources and focus from the overall PDMLink implementation.
Additionally, when scripts malfunction or require modification (PDMLink version change/MOR), it creates immediate, unanticipated costs in the form of added consulting and more schedule delays.
Legend for PDMLink increases the odds of achieving data compatibility in a reasonable time frame and lowers the risk of having data integrity issues remain undetected.
4. How does Legend improve PDMLink implementations?
When engineering assets are fully populated within PDMLink, data search capabilities are improved and users have more control over Intellectual Property (IP), which reduces cost through design reuse and collaboration.
5. Describe the relationship between PTC and I-Cubed.
Legend is the only PTC-authorized bulk-load application for CAD documents that do not reside in Pro/INTRALINK. Legend for PDMLink leverages the workgroup manager's file adapter to ensure data integrity for Pro/ENGINEER and Wildfire files. Also, I-Cubed's partnership with PTC for delivery of heterogeneous CAD integration extends Legend's reach beyond Pro/ENGINEER data to third-party CAD systems.
For nearly a decade, I-Cubed has successfully partnered with PTC to migrate CAD data to Pro/PDM, Pro/INTRALINK, and now Windchill PDMLink.
6. How do I quickly describe Legend benefits to my senior managers?
A single CAD document may take thousands of collaborative hours to produce and remain relevant for decades - representing millions of dollars of opportunity. These assets also represent lost opportunity if companies lack an efficient solution for leveraging them beyond the CAD department. As a result, the migration of these priceless assets requires senior-level visibility. For a concise overview of Legend, please refer to our Executive Summary Presentation. This presentation describes the PTC/I-Cubed partnership and provides a high-level description of Legend.
7. How does the Legend process assist with data preparation and cleansing?
To assist with data preparation and cleansing, Legend for PDMLink incorporates the three "Cs" of data migration: Compatibility, Completeness, and Cleanliness.
8. Can customers be trained to complete complex data migrations?
Yes, Legend fosters customer independence by allowing customers and partners to successfully load data upon completion of a structured knowledge-transfer process. For details, please refer to our sample Legend Quickstart document and Best Practices table of contents.
9. What file formats does Legend support?
10. Is Legend compatible with Workgroup Manager for Pro/ENGINEER?
Yes. Legend is fully compatible with workgroup managers. This means that data loaded using Legend for PDMLink can be checked out and manipulated with workgroup managers with full functionality.
11. Can Legend be demonstrated during PDMLink demos?
Yes, the strategic nature of the PTC/I-Cubed (I-Cubed) relationship provides for a limited number of demo licenses for trained PTC pre-sales engineers to use during pre-sales activities. Additionally, I-Cubed support engineers can be requested based on the complexity of the demo. For additional details, please contact Legend Sales.
12. What is VerDes?
VerDes is a supplemental program that verifies family tables and designates parameters prior to data migration. VerDes also searches files for problem areas such as duplicate file names and missing dependents.
13. What if I have additional questions not reflected in this list of FAQs?
Contact Legend sales at 1-919-755-5451.
14. What if my data type is not currently supported by Legend?
Customization services are available to meet customer-specific cases. However, the process for evaluating customized solutions may require an initial fee-based assessment. For additional details, please contact Legend Sales.
15. What is the customer evaluation process for Legend?
Evaluating Legend is a staged process that provides the appropriate amount of detail at the right time in the sales process. Our Legend Web site provides an overview that serves as an introduction to the value that Legend will provide.
Once this information is reviewed, you'll be ready to complete the Legend Customer Profile for PDMLink(LCP) or Legend Customer Profile for Pro/INTRALINK (LCP). The LCPs are designed to acquire specific information regarding your data migration needs. It is divided into four sections:
· Contact Information
· Source Information
· Target Information
· Migration Information
Once completed, an I-Cubed consultant will review the information and schedule a Web-Based LCP review to close any outstanding technical questions regarding product capabilities.
The end deliverable will consist of a formal quotation that includes the fee schedule for both software and the associated Legend Quickstart.
16. How do we develop a migration plan with multiple CAD systems and data repositories?
The best way to develop a comprehensive migration plan is to include a Legend consultant in the initial PDMLink scoping exercise for services. Over the course of five days, we will conduct a migration assessment and provide documented recommendations for:
· Data Preparation/Cleansing
· Load Sequencing and Scheduling
· Required Legend Modules
· Customization Points
· Training Requirements
This deliberate planning approach will set the appropriate expectation for deliverables and enhance execution by establishing roles and responsibilities early in the services process.
17. Does Legend address data loading for Pro/INTRALINK?
